I wholeheartedly agree with you. Obviously they need to pay salaries, overhead, advertising, reconditioning, etc.

If a successful dealership IS moving (selling) used cars, the statistics would show they MAKE more money on each transaction, rather than LOSE money on each transaction.

The bothersome issue is---just how much profit the dealership is willing to relinquish, or NOT, in order to win the sale. When they (Wilmington/Koons Lexus), aren't willing to sacrafice $0.01 of profit, it's time to move on, and call them what they are. A ripoff!

Bellex--in your case, Wilmington/Koons Lexus was probably thinking..."if you can't beat em', join em'!" lol

LS430inDE. Earlier post……………………….............................................................................................……….

It was a CPO (certified pre-owned) and the sticker had on it $44,995 or something similar. Knowing how much the LS's were going for at auction (Manheim), I took a printout of all the LS's that sold the week previous.

(all 04-05 LS's at Manheim sold between $23k~$35k).

LS430inDE. Later post……………………..................................................................................…

asked how much the LS REALLY is selling for, the salesperson looked at me and said, (and I'm paraphrasing).....sir--it's on the window...$39,995. cond....

regarding the dealership buying the car for ~$35k?? NO WAY.

……………………………………………………………………………….......................................................
Why so much inconsistency???
I’m not here to argue with fellow CL member, but I sold cars for over 5 years selling for Infiniti’s, Lexus and Mercedes Dealerships (in D.C. metro area), which I like to think are affluent areas as well , I assure you, that dealerships are not making “that much” profit! So calm down… Unless this is the only Lexus dealership in 100 miles radius, that type of profit is unreal. Buying car for 22k and selling for 44k, comm’on, get real. The biggest profit makers in the used car side at Lexus was LX470 (when i was selling cars), once in a blue moon we’d make 10k profit. It’s nearly impossible to get more than that on any other models.

so if a sticker says 35k what are realistic numbers for what that dealership most likely acquired the vehicle for, and what is an acceptable amount of profit/loss for the dealership to let it go for (what would they be willing to negotiate down to, on average)??

Wow, this thread still running? Like I said, it's a dog-eat-dog world out there. When I was shopping, I hung around the forums and read on what people were posting. At one particular junction, someone had written that they just traded in their 01 or 02 LS430 and got "x" dollars for it. I don't remember the price. Anyway, the dealership was in Southern NJ and I was willing to go down there and take the vehicle for $1K more than the trade-in price because the "seller" said the car was spotless. Anyway, when I called the Lexus dealer, they said the car was "spotless" and that it was going for $10K over the "x" dollar. I was SHOCKED at the quoted price (which ended up being the internet listed price too). They turned around in one week, no knowing what the heck they did, and expected a quick $10K turnaround on it.

So, dealers are out there to make a quick buck (or in this case 10K bucks) on these deals and hopes that the best buyer comes in and takes it, but it's also up to the consumer to do their homework and see what the true value of these cars are.

Like I've said before, I can see how both sides work. The dealer if they don't make any profit, isn't going to be selling cars for every long. The consumer has to cut and get the price they feel comfortable with. What I don't like about some person's attitude when negotiating is the "oh, if they don't make money off of me, then they will the next guy..." That's the "next guy" attitude that gets us all into trouble. I don't need to be more fuel conscious because the next guy will be... I don't need to start recycling because the next guy will... I don't need to "Y" because the next guy will... always hoping the next guy covers what you should be doing. Again, don't take this to mean that we should be supporting the dealers to stay afloat... hey, if they can't pull a profit, then for whatever reason, they can't and perhaps need to fold. I'm just saying don't go in thinking the 'next guy' will do something.

First, was the car C.P.O.'d with the 10k bump? Again C.P.O. cost approx 2.5k for LS.
Second, even if the previous owners says it's spotless, no guarantee it didn't need ANY maintenance work what so ever, which maybe dealership did.
Lastly, they are "asking" 10k over trade-in price, doesn't mean that's the FINAL PRICE

Well, it is a basic law of economics. Demand and supply.
Sometimes dealers are easier to deal with than the private sellers. Some private sellers value their cars so much that they fail to see this law of economics.

I think the best deals come from lease returns held by small dealers. If you have access to Manheim data (I just came to know about a website named google ) you can add 2-3K to the auction price and offer to the dealer. If they are in the business of selling auction cars then they will sell it. They need to make room for the next batch.

Another place to look for are the trade-ins at non-lexus dealers or the ones specializing on high-end imports.

Lexus dealers are good but their overheads are just too high and the chances are that they may not be able to match offer from a savvy shopper. I would expect good lexus dealers to keep only good cars on their lot and sell everything else to auctions.

It is just a business so don't break you head over it. Just move on and look elsewhere. Be very calm. Dealers are easy to work with if you keep cool.

Cheers!

I don't know what was done, but it was too old to be CPO'd, it was just last year and it was a 2001 or 2002 model and over the mileage allowance for CPO. It was a UL trim and with the saddle interior if I remember correctly. The real stinker was that from time the member posted online that they traded it in yesterday to the point I called was three days... how much could have been done in three days?

For me, my buying experience was very good from Lexus dealer to non-Lexus (which I eventually purchased from). Also, yes... the asking price and selling price are two different things. My first experience was with Lexus of Warnock, where I service my RX, and when I went to look at a silver ML trim they had, it was listing for I think $33K, but they cut it right down to $30K at the table. I test drove it and just might have pulled the trigger had it not been for some minor paint "bird dropping" issues and that it was not the CL trim.

Here are the column names

Date Auction Sale Type Price Mileage Cond Color Eng Trans In Sample

8G = 8 Cylinder

A = Automatic

Yes = This car was in the sample when auction summary information was pulled. (Extremely high and low price cars are typically not included in the summary calculations.)
