I personally don't like the portable suction cup nav units; the 3D view is difficult to see as opposed to the top-down on the OEM nav (eclipse used to make an in-the-dash nav with the same OEM view [I believe they are the OEM nav maker]). The other drawback to the portable units is no gyro for dead-recogning. I used a portable unit in Boston a couple of years back (at night, of course) and it was next to useless along the Charles River with all the tall trees creating signal dropouts. The OEM unit has a gyro in there there that will use inertial measurements to estimate where the vehicle is it loses its GPS signal. Don't expect aviation-grade accuracy, but it's a lot better than having no DR capability!
