'01 LS UL ticking noise
Took the car into the dealer for an oil change. When I dropped the car off for the service, I mentioned a ticking noise (louder than normal valvetrain noise) on the driver side. It was rpm-dependent.
Dealer called today, said they found the cause of the ticking, saying it was a "drive belt", I'm assuming the serpentine belt to drive the accessories. He said it was cracked and as it turned, it was making that noise. I had them go ahead and replace it, and they also did the transmission and rear diff fluid service. They wanted to also do a front/rear brake pad replacement (sensors not on yet) at a tidy sum of $700+. I passed on that.
Listening to the noise, it seemed to be coming from the driver-side rear of the engine. Really seems fishy that it was a belt. I'll be looking at it closely when I pick it up tomorrow. 12,000 miles left on the warranty.
Any thoughts?

I had the same issue about 2 years ago.
I had a noise that bothered me and it was the belt. This is the downside to luxury cars rather we buy them used or new, they all cost when it comes to upkeep, imagine if it was a Benz,Jag,BMW or audi. Its not a situation were there trying to get over at all with the noise, minds sounded like it car from somewere else also.
Now if you get it back and the noise is still there, its a wrong diagnoses. The brake pad thing is tricky, I hear they recommend changing it well before the danger zone of all in replacement of rotors and pads. Nonetheless its hard to determine if they are diagnosing a need for immediate change or if they want you to change before your even close to damaging. Its mostly all precaution.
Ask others on the site abut the brake issue, when the told me to change mines I had a grinding noise so I had no questions. They said I was close to total replacement.Anyways, best of fortune to you on the results.
Thank you

Picked up car tonight, no ticking.. May send a sample to Blackstone for testing to see if there is anything unusual in the oil.. Even if they don't find anything, at least I'll have a baseline so I can watch for wear in the future.
Brakes are at 4mm. I may be looking at ordering the pads and doing them myself. I have with all of my other autos over the past 20 years so why stop now.

TT, if you are doing your brakes, can you take pictures and do a small write up? I haven't seen a really good one available and it would nice when me and other members need to do their, it will be there.
