I have a 2001 LS. The auto door lock feature activates when the transmission is put into drive. However, after the trans. is put into park aren't the front doors supposed to unlock/open when you pull on the handle? The driver's door works this way but the passenger side has to be unlocked manually, or with the lock/unlock switch, before the passenger can exit (which is inconvenient and annoying). Is this normal?
I looked in the manual and can't find any information regarding this, except for the auto locking feature itself. Also, both rear child-protector switches are in the off position so that's not the problem. Any input or advice will be greatly appreciated.
I do believe you have to have the dealer program it to unlock the doors when the vehicle is placed in park. I had my dealer program all the doors to unlock with only 1 push of the unlock button. The factory defualt setting of pushing the unlock twice to open all dors was a pain. I'm pretty sure the r/f door lock issue is a safety feature.
Thanks for the reply Lex012006. Are you saying that the dealer can program the doors to unlock automatically when the transmission is placed in park?
If not, perhaps I need to clarify. When I put into park the doors stay locked. When I pull the latch on the driver's side the door unlocks and opens. When the latch is pulled on the passenger side the door won't open. I have to press the unlock switch or the passenger has to manually flip the lock "tab" that is next to the door latch.
I have not had the car long but I seem to recall that the passenger side door would unlock/open by pulling the latch handle - the same as the driver's side does. As I said earlier, it's frustrating everytime I put in park and my passenger is tugging on the door latch and it won't open until one of us manually unlocks the door.
A friend told me that there might be a broken piece on the lock "tab" that prevents it from unlocking when the latch is pulled. The dealer says they have to remove the entire door panel to find out, which will cost me $100, whether or not anything is wrong. They never mentioned anything about re-programming the doors to unlock automatically. In fact, they didn't seem to know anything except that they can pull the door panel off.
If anyone knows whether or not the passenger door should unlock by pulling the latch handle please let me know.

Yes you can ask the dealer to do that.

Thanks again ~ John
I see what your saying, and yes, your right, it is supposed to unlock on its own when you try adn open it, regardless if it was locked. Thats how the front doors work.
