Hello Friends,
Does anyone have pics or discription of how to change air filter?
I just got a K&N filter and want to see if MPG changes.
on 6/4/07 I'm having the tranny flushed and maybe the timing belt changed.

the car has 46,000 miles on it. I'm the 2nd owner and don't know how the other owner took care of it.

Tranny Flush and Air Filter changes would be a good idea. Make sure you use Toyota/Lexus tranny fluid - Don't use anything but OEM fluids...
Don't waste your money on the Timing Belt change you only have 46k your good for a long time!!

I've been told many, many, many times to leave the car alone ( esp the time belt )

You make about 15 so I'm sure others will concur. I'll leave it alone for now.

Hi Carmine,
The air filter replacement is quite straightforward (if the same as on my 2001). It is on the passenger side of the engine compartment up front near the grill up on top. There are 4 clips surrounding the air filter case. You can reach 2 easily, they just snap off to the side. The other 2 are hidden by the passenger side engine cover. Remove the 2 forward "screws" holding the engine cover on and the remaining 2 air filter clips are easily accessible. Open the box, swap out the filter. Maybe 5 total minutes if you take your time.

Do you know that the oiled cotton/gause types of filters (K&N style) do a poorer job of filtration than paper filters? And you aren't going to pick up any power vs the paper stock filter. Also, be SURE that you don't over-oil the K&N or else the oil vapors can destroy your Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. Best bet is to stick with the stock filter.

P.S. MPG can't change due simply to a filter change on a MAF car like the LS. That old wives tale is a hold-over from days of carbureted vehicles when a clogged filter functioned like a choke, making the car run richer. On a MAF car, a SEVERLY restrictive filter would function only as a throttle -- it wouldn't make the car run richer.
