Back up Camera
Hello,
I have a 2006 Lexus LA 430 , can anyone give me tips on fixing the rear camera, i get nothing on the screen. I do not have a service manual yet, was hoping there was a easy fix. Also to replace do i have to remove the entire trunk liner to get at the wiring ?
thanks

Do you have the regular screen items at startup?
🔌 1. Check if the screen switches when you shift into Reverse
- Does the navigation or display screen change when you shift into “R”?
- Yes, but no image: The display system is fine — the issue is likely with the camera itself or the signal feed.
- No change at all: Could be a reverse signal problem (the system doesn’t know the car is in reverse).

⚙️ 2. Verify the Reverse Light works
- If the reverse lights don’t come on, the reverse signal wire or gear selector switch might be faulty — and the camera won’t activate because it never gets the “Reverse” signal.
- Replace any blown reverse-light fuse or bulb first.
📺 3. Check the camera connection in the trunk lid
- Open the trunk and locate the camera harness near the trunk hinge area — the wire can break inside the flexible rubber boot over time.
- Gently flex and inspect the wiring for cracks, corrosion, or broken insulation.
- If broken, repair with solder or high-quality butt connectors and heat-shrink.

⚡ 4. Test for power at the camera
- With ignition ON and gear in Reverse (parking brake engaged for safety):
- Check for 12V power at the camera connector (red wire usually).
- If there’s no power → trace back toward the control unit (behind the navigation screen or in trunk).
- If there’s power but no image → likely a dead camera.
- Check for 12V power at the camera connector (red wire usually).
💾 5. Camera failure (very common on LS430)
- The OEM camera module often fails due to moisture intrusion or internal circuit corrosion.
- Replacement options:
- OEM camera: Lexus part (expensive, ~$400–$700).
- Aftermarket replacement: Many plug-and-play units available on eBay or Amazon for $60–$120 — ensure it’s NTSC and for LS430 2001–2006.
- You can also retrofit a higher-quality aftermarket camera using the existing wiring.
- OEM camera: Lexus part (expensive, ~$400–$700).
🧠 6. Check the Navigation/Display ECU
- If you have no display at all (black screen, no menu), check the navigation ECU under the trunk floor (right side, near CD/DVD drive).
- Loose connectors, corrosion, or water damage in that area can disable the video input entirely.

This came up with me a year ago. The electronics still worked (message on screen) but no image, or lines, etc. I got a new (so claimed) camera on ebay for $50-60 and had a stereo installer install it as I did not want to mess with it. Paid 1 hour or labor. Fixed it fine.
Anyone try one of the newer wide angle camera's with Sony starlink low light chip? I was thinking of trying one.

NTSC resolution is 720x480 pixels for standard definition digital video, though the original analog broadcast used 525 scanlines with about 480 visible lines. This standard was used in North America and Japan and featured a frame rate of 29.97 frames per second.

True, but the LS430 uses RGB input with a much lower resolution (400x240) so you will need an NTSC > RGB converter that can also downscale.
Those cameras work with the Android head units, but not with the OEM screen.

Ok - good to know - will check it out - not sure why they list LS430 but you may be right - they might be referring to the Android (like Teyes) units
Boomer is correct in that the display most likely won't display higher resolutions. Even if it did the camera would have to pick either Red Blue or Green color unless it was an rgb camera.
On another to mention that putting wrong resolution on display could burn up the circuit. I have seen that many times on computer monitors on trying to display a resolution it could not handle.

I did find the one I originally was looking at with what appears to be the right spec - but alas - it says wireless - and that first one is probably not going to work like Boomer said. Typical Aliexpress and it's hard to buy stuff there - listing items without much info or suggesting its going to work with your OEM screen - I just notice my backup camera lens even after cleaning it, is having some type of halo ring and not very clear.
And they quote: The camera is compatible with both the original car screen and Android navigation systems, making it a versatile addition to your vehicle.
This is a dice roll at best - but I can shelf it if I buy it and it doesn't work.
