Default front seat comfort - a DIY improvement

A few years ago I replaced the seat foam for the drivers side in my '05 LS 430 with an OEM pad. The foam had sagged some after about 130,000 miles and 15 years. The new OEM foam was only a modest improvement in seat comfort, and left me disappointed in the result. [changing out the seat foam was a project I was able to handle with a few additional tools, a good pair of gloves (there are a lot of sharp edges under the seat)and the seat weighs a LOT, and it came out the rear].

I put one of the aftermarket pads (Gigi brand) on top of the seat, with modest improvement still. A few days ago, I decided to add a 1/2 inch closed cell memory foam under that pad, and the combination of the closed cell foam and the Gigi pad together are actually a nice improvement in seat comfort. My prototype secures the two pads together with Gorilla tape (really looks awful) but I'll figure something better out, maybe use double sided tape or glue even to join the two together. I used the Gigi seat pad as a template to cut out the foam to the same shape with a knife and scissors.

If you are suffering from drivers seat blues give this a try.

I would almost bet my next paycheck, 90%+ of drivers in a 04-06 LS get the blues (butt aches) on a drive of 45 minutes or more!

Add my 2001 UL to that.

I also made a seat pad for my LS400 - the pictures are for that car but it is the same design and construction as the DYI LS 430 pad. I just drove 80 miles today and seat felt really good. A big improvement.

Would have the links of the pad and the foam?

If someone is redoing their seat cushion would the closed cell foam under the factory seat cover help in your opinion?

hello camry200K -
I would not add the closed cell foam under the factory seat cover as it would interfere with the heating and cooling of the seat (if you have that option) and the cover probably would not fit right either. It would be a very significant job to remove the seat and seat cover to add the foam, not worth it in my opinion. With my add-on, you can remove the DIY pad if you need heating and cooling of the seat. In my opinion, at least for my car, these controls are not very good and I never use heating and cooling of the driver seat.

This is the seat pad I used - GIGI.

I don't have a link to the closed cell foam - my wife ordered it a while back for another project and we had surplus laying around so I used that. This might work- 1/2 inch closed cell upholstery foam.

As an aside, I have driven the car about 150 miles since I added the DIY pad combo and it is truly a significant improvement in seat comfort, highly recommended. One other curiosity - my wife has NEVER complained of the seat comfort in the passenger seat. But she is a lot smaller and lighter than me, who knows, maybe that has something to do with it. . . . .
