Default EGR Problem?

Howdy.
This is a copy of my last post on a previous older thread, in case it gets missed there.
I have similar problems again, which happens occasionally, and is usually fixed by "Rebooting", i.e. disconnecting the battery for about 30 minutes. However, it's not working the same this time. Now, I also have an exhaust type smell when the window is open, but not when the window is closed. I think it also appears to be less smelly once fully warmed up, but I'm not sure about that.. The only thing I can think of is a possible fault with the EGR system, but there is no sign of any exhaust leak type of sounds. I haven't found much info in the forums about the EGR, especially for the 2004/2005 LS430.
Any thoughts on what else might cause these problems? Where exactly is the EGR system? I believe they are a big hassle to do anything with. If it's a broken pipe, or similar, might it be possible to repair the pipe in-situ? Or is it more likely to be some other part of the EGR system?
There is no Check Engine light, nor are there any codes. It's just using more fuel, sometimes rough running, transmission not as smooth as usual, and exhaust pipes not as clean as usual. All as previously. Plus the smells, which is something new. Car has done 230,000 kilometres, 143,000 miles.
Any, and all, information and suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

Hopefully your scan tool supports live data, post your short term and long term fuel trims. Stop disconnecting the battery this hampers diagnostics since it takes time for the computer to do drive cycles, learn fuel trims and a bunch of other stuff.

EGR simply means exhaust gasses are put back into the intake to reduce emissions. It has a whole host of ill effects on the engine long term but there is no reasonable way to disable EGR.

Thank you LeX2K. I've always wondered about the Fuel Trims, but have no idea what they should be, or when's the correct time to read them. I assume the motor needs to be warmed up? Then read the figures at idle? In gear, or in Park? Or am I totally wrong there?
I hadn't had any thoughts of disabling the EGR, and am only assuming there could be an EGR fault there somewhere, because of the smell, which would presumably have to be repaired, or replaced. I'm also assuming it's probably the main reason for running rich etc. But I don't know how difficult it is to get at it, or replace it. But I believe it's not the easiest of jobs.
I was aware the computer needs time and distance to get itself sorted! Been there, done that! Lol.

Exhaust gas recirculation is accomplished differently on a 430 compared to a 400 and other cars. The 430 does not have an EGR valve or pipe

Default Interesting development.

Well, that was interesting! On my way home from work today, Sunday, I bought some generic hoses which I hope will fit! A bit difficult measuring the required inside diameter without risking taking off the very hardened hoses and damaging them. Within 1 minute of leaving the shop, everything came right! Idle is fine, fuel consumption appears to have dropped to normal, gear changes are back to being as smooth as the proverbial, instead of as rough as guts, the HUD which plugs into the OBDII port, is showing very close to the dashboard readout, as it should, instead of reading considerably higher, and I think the smell has gone. I am delighted, especially as I didn't actually do anything! I do have a possible theory, though. I have always topped off the fuel tank to completely full. Maybe the charcoal canister became contaminated with raw fuel? In which case, maybe it has slowly "dried out" and is no longer "wet"? Who wants to blow that theory out of the water?. Or maybe the moveable flap, or whatever, in the VSV was stuck, and has now come free due to road vibrations? Another theory to be dismissed? I'm not going to change the hoses or clean the VSV at this stage, I just want to see what happens. However, I have cleaned the black from the exhaust pipes, so I'll have a better idea of how things are, when I go to work at 05:00 tomorrow morning, Monday. And I will still replace some hoses and clean the VSV at some stage.
From now on, I will not fill the tank right up, I will stop the first time the filler cuts out. Better to be safe than sorry.
Thanks for your help, guys, much appreciated.
