Car Behaving as if Battery's Been Disconnected

A couple of times recently after starting from cold, I've noticed the following:
  • Fast-idle is exceptionally high;
  • Front defogger LED blinks, along with 'self-test' of all the climate-control motors, flaps etc;
  • Multi-function display shows 'Range Approx' when I normally leave it on 'Tank Avg';
  • Tank Avg today showing 12 m.p.g. at half-tank, when last time it was closer to 20 (although admittedly the wife has driven it in the meantime!).
The battery is less than 2 years old and shows no sign of weakness.

Other memory functions however appear unaffected (i.e. seat presets).

I'm fearing ECU. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Rich

I'm now wondering if it's the battery. 11.8V having rested overnight, 12.4V after a 20-minute drive.
(By the way it's Yuasa, not genuine Toyota.)

The LS430 is a car that has to have a good voltage even while it is starting or the ecu can produce a multitude of problems as I can attest to. Battery can be good but you can have too high parasitic drain when off. Don't think it is as high as a trunk light bulb staying on because battery would be dead overnight. Check alternator voltage at battery when car is on and should be around 14 volts.. If alternator is good and you check drain with an ammeter and is good then it probably is the battery. 11.8v is too low especially when you crank from there. Short trips will not charge the battery as they will normally only replenish what the starting did after 10 minutes. Try charging the battery and go from there.

Have you removed the battery terminals and checked for corrosion? Are they nice and snug but not overly tight?
might be a good idea to replace the pos terminal…

Thanks, but they're fine.
The battery seems to be dropping about 0.2V for every day not driven.
It's not OEM, although I'd expect it to hold up a little better.
I once got 7 years out of a genuine Toyota one.

200 ma drain overnight is fine. Did you check your alternator voltage?

A couple of things. depending on the year, do not leave the key in the car. The key talks to the computer. Draws on the battery.

Clean all the terminals with petroleum jelly (about two dollars at Wal Mart). I use it on every connection I take a part. Works as well as Bulb Grease. Learned about it from my father.
