Default AC light flashing - how much to replace clutch?

Hoping to get some guidance again. I have done a search and it appears that the reason my 96 AC light is sometimes flashing is that the compressor is likely failing. I can do most general work but not sure I would be up for this especially since it involves draining the Freon, etc. I see places like Rockauto sell compressor assemblies for <$300. Assuming I can get my mechanic to install it for another $300 and then somebody else to do the recharge. Is this a job that can be done sub $1k.

If not, I have also read that the compressor can eventually seize the clutch which will snap the belt rendering the car without power steering, alternator, etc. So what fuse or connector can I remove/disconnect to make sure this doesn't happen? My son drives the car and I don't want something to happen.

Thanks in advance.
