Replacing starter
Friends,
I have a 99 ls 400 with 180k miles that need a new starter. I was wondering if you have any tips on the brand name of the location where I can purchase the proper gaskets and maybe the knockers? At this point, I welcome any advice in facilitating my install. My mechanic's skill is above average and not afraid to get dirty.
Thanks so very much for your help,
George

only gaskets you need are intake.. and you dont even need a starter, at 165k my 99 started to do the click click thing, we pulled it down and replaced the solenoid kit.. that was 8+ years ago,(2010) and it is still starting perfect....

Your brushes are probably near end of life.
Replace the brush assembly..check.the commutator for wear.
Check bearings/ bushing run out- tolerances..
Lubricant is tired after 20.years: reduction gear assembly and motor bushings/bearings.
Unsure whether Toyota or Denso branded or recommended lubricant(s) available for the starter..
Anyone?
Part numbers?

When I was changing the starter on my 1999 LS, I took a shallow cardboard box and inserted sort of partitions to make multiple sections for bolts, nuts and small parts. Each section was numbered and I was also taking notes of each step I was taking and writing down the number of the corresponding sections of parts removed. I was also taking pictures from time to time just in case.
I used blue tape to mark hose ends and metal fittings they go onto with letters , same with electric connectors. ( e.g. A connects to A, E to E)
Staying organized is important or you will have a bunch of bolts and nuts left when you are done

Friend,
Thanks so very much for your advice. Sorry for not posting earlier but I am nursing a bad knee injury has kept me sidelined for a long time. As we speak I am calling the day due to the discomfort in both knees. Regarding this particular starter, If my memory serves me correctly, This is the second time I change it in this car. The last time, My friend kindly helped me out and mainly he finish the whole job. In return, I build him a nice concrete bbq. LOL. I did remember we only changed the starter with a pep boys brand. I still kick my self for not getting a rebuilt OEM.
I will take images of the solenoid. I think the starter is not the problem. I think to remember something to do with the starter not working well after the installation. The current starter only lasted some 20k miles. Perhaps I overlooked something? I do remember the car exhibited the typical symptoms of a failing starter.
Thanks so very much for your sage advice
.
George
Friends,
I just finished installing the starter. The actual starter was bad the solenoid was engaging but the starter would not spin. I was able to install the starter without removing the water bridge. However, if I would do it again, I would remove it and put new gaskets. In the process, my temp sensor broke. I found a good replacement on eBay for about $ 8 dollars delivered.
Thanks for all the insightful advice,
G.
