1999 Half Axle
I was recently working on brakes and noticed the RR outboard axle is torn. Got a used axle on Ebay from a lower mileage LS, it came with inboard cover off and grease partially spilled.
Is that cover easy to reinstall?

Just change the cork gasket and hammer the cover back on? Do I need to to take the boot off to clean out old grease and put new grease? Or I can do all that with the boot on?

A) Clean the heck out of the entire joint/boot/axle shaft/differential flange bolts, lock plates, and cover. Really clean.
B) That cover is sandwiched on in between the flange and the joint at reassembly. I use Valvoline Semi-Synthetic Molybdenum Disulfide grease to repack the joint. It flows nicely at temp, and it sticks around to lubricate the ***** and tracks.
C) Really clean is critical because there is very high torque being applied, and the merest grit will tear everything up.
