Occasionally the automatic shut off for the gas pump fill nozzle does not respond fast enough to avoid spillover into the gas cap door overflow pocket.lol
Last this happened, I detected faint smell of gasoline in car.
Decided to remove the trunk side quarter panel trim cover to investigate.
The spillover tube was completely flat atop rear wheel well and was too age-hardened to resuscitate...so ordered a new tube and through chassis grommet from Lexus Drain hose P.N. 90446-09015 and chassis grommet P.N. 90480-22022. ( 22022 molded onto grommet)

that overflow pocket is mainly a water drain line that drains to the pavement, and is not meant for gas spills.
there is a secondary breather tube parallel to the main fill spout that needs to be clear at all times, and recirculates back to the tank.
if you are experiencing backsplash it's another problem, such as the nozzle not pushed far enough into the fill spout or a bad nozzle.
in CA our nozzles have a vapor guard on them that acts like a catch or block to prevent backsplash. it should cover the entire mouth of the fill hole.

It is indeed a gas drain for overflow situations so you don't burn that pretty paint. Just about every car dumps fuel directly to pavement inside of the body surface if you get an overfill. It falls under "de minimus" hc emissions and it is allowed under law. The parallel line back to the tank does help the fuel nozzles "breathe" as they fill the tank and displace a large quantity of fuel-laden air.

Image of tube profile...completely smashed flat...probably not a priority project for most, but as discusssd in first post, bought gas in a rural area and the gas pump nozzle auto shutoff did not react quickly enough and had an odor of gas inside car which led to the investigation..what happened is spillover could not drain fast enough due to kinked tube and some ended up in trunk pocket. (The hose was not sealing 100% with gas door drain pocket)
