Default Which is the SL Lock Up Solenoid?

I went to the JY today to find a SL Lockup solenoid for my LS due to my P0770 CEL.

People said that its the forward most solenoid or the dark grey one, but there are two dark grey ones. I initlally got the forward most one yesterday, but when i went to the dealer to ask the parts lady which one is the lockup, she said its the 2nd from the front, meaning the other grey one. So i went back to the JY, luckily everything was still apart, so i slid the 2nd from the front solenoid out from the trans and took it home with me.

Out of the pictures below, which one is the SL lockup solenoid? none of them have part numbers so it doesn't make it easy to identify which is the one I need

Initial one I grabbed #1 black connector

2nd one I grabbed #2 w/ yellow connector

Default Do they work?

Did you energize your old solenoid(s) to see if they work? Unless there is mechanical damage visible in the valve piston/cylinder, the usual culprit is a bad or burned coil. Easy to check to see if it responds to 12v.

I was going to remove my old ones and test it with my drill battery, would 18v be harmful to test them with? if so, I can use my car battery and see.

Also, do you know if the black one or yellow connector is the SL lockup solenoid?

That was the culprit! When I removed my old lockup solenoid (black connector) it was clicking when i shook it meaning the internal windings or parts were broken. Car shifts beautifully now and no more shuddering when coming to a stop! I've been hunting this problem for almost a year now and finally got it 100% solved. Thankfully it didn't cost me anything since I snuck this bad boy in my glove at the JY.

You actually are paying for it, you just don't know it. Every time you go into a store and buy something, you are paying a higher price because of the amount of theft going on.

I can't believe he admitted that in an open forum.

I'm just returning the favor to them. I purchased a side view mirror from them about a month back and they didn't refund me or allow me to exchange it after it didn't work. So....I guess we're even now.

I really wasn't trying to give you a hard time. More in the line of "it didn't cost me anything". I keep hearing people talk about "free" health care and it just drives me crazy. Or, buy one get one "free". Nothing is free, somewhere someone is paying for it.

If they gave you a hard time for such a small purchase in the past I would not shop there again unless it was ABSOLUTELY necessary.

Unfortunately, that's the only yard that's relatively close to me and had a 95+ LS400 available. These cars are a rare find in JYs in seems. That yard alone is 30 miles, the others south of Phx are in a shady area and even further away and I don't feel comfortable leaving my nice LS there for extended periods of time. A lot of Mexicans with landscaper trucks just parking any which way without any regard for other cars around, causing door dings and possibly theft. I had a radio almost stolen from my Accord a few years back, luckily I caught it in time.

Its not like I just went in there for this solenoid, I bought some other trim panel pieces for my parent's 03 Sienna and a couple window switches since their van has 257k on it. I also purchased a 5 lug conversion setup from an Acura CL and Prelude for my 93 accord in the past month (approx. $200 in parts: knuckles, hubs, bearings, calipers and rotors) so its not like I'm doing them a disservice by not purchasing things from them, I still give them business.

But for something like this solenoid, where they cannot guarantee that it works is something I believe they shouldn't sell since it would be a big hassle to drive 60 miles round trip in traffic and have to remove the part myself (which took about an hour working under a car with hand tools to undo all 19 bolts and deal with the mess of tranny fluid showering down on my forearms). They'd probably charge something like 50 bucks for this, which I don't believe is fair, as the car had no history of running, could possibly have had 200 or 300k miles since I can't power on the cluster.
