My 1998 LS 400 AC does work but doesn't blow as cold temperature that I'm expecting it to. I had the AC vacuumed out and refilled with R134 and the proper amount of oil, etc. The sight glass doesn't have any bubbles. The problem I have is that the AC temperature doesn't get COLD, it only gets cool. For example, it was 86 and my AC temperature at the vents was only 58 degrees on high fan and it cooled to 55 degrees on low fan. My 2008 RX 350 AC temp on the same day got down to 40 degrees. Does anyone have an idea of what area I should focus on to get my AC colder? I don't want to have to disassemble the dashboard if at all possible. Thank you.
On a gen 1 the coldest temperature setting is 65 degree's. So whats the lowest setting on the temperature control on the dash? 55 degrees is way better than just 65, I'm with you it should be adjustable to at least that 40 number, though the main problem with really low temps would be icing of the evaporator and that maybe why they are set to only go so low.
I have a 98 as well. Ill give you my a/c output temp at the vents as a point of reference. I agree your temps dont seem to be cool enough. I have a probe thermostat always inserted into the center vent. Here in Virginia temps have been in the mid 90's the last week or so.
8am : outside temp 74 degrees ( a/c vent temp 40 degrees) after 20 mins of driving on MED fan setting
4pm: outside temp 93 degrees ( a/c vent temp 42 degrees) after 20 mins of driving on MED fan setting

I don't think you understand vent temps. A proper functioning system will use 40 degree air to get the cabin cooler to 65. The 65 degree number you are referring to has nothing to do with vent temps. It is simply how cold you want the cabin air to be.
55 degree vent temps are not normal. Replace the filter drier and recharge.
Yeah I know vent temps, but thought Lexus with their fancy climate control would just regulate it differently. I know that the temp can not be too low or the evaporator would freeze.
Did they do anything with the receiver dryer or the expansion valve? If not one of them could be part of the problem.
It takes a while for my car to get really cool when the temp is high and the sun is blazing buy as soon as I get the car in some shade or the sun goes down the AC gets cold. My wife's GS AC gets cold right away though
