Default Disabling Telescoping steering wheel also disabled my mirrors

I have a 1996 LS400. I want to disable the telescoping steering wheel function so that the wheel does not retract every time I shut the car off. I like the feature, but I live in Arizona and the high heat has caused the motors to stop working. When it cools down they work. The car is new to me and I do not want to risk having the steering wheel stick in the up position.

I disabled the retracting steering wheel by removing the two plug ins on the computer under the steering column It worked great but now I have no electric mirrors! I need my mirrors to work! Any Suggestions?[/QUOTE]

Each of your motors have two wires going to them. If you cut either wire and put a simple switch in series to the line, you could control when the motor would work. Do this with a two stage switch and you could control both motors at the same time.

I just had my local shop disable the tilt/telescope on my '99LS, they told me they had to disassemble the covering for the steering column to disconnect the control for the motors. But did not affect the operation of my mirrors. There's a good video on Youtube outlining this but requires quite a bit to get to it.

If I'm not mistaken you can disable the auto tilt away feature via the Toyota scan tool. A dealer may be able to do it for you fairly cheap.
