Default What this hose for?

I found this broken hose and I'm just wondering what this hose is for. I can see it's attached to the bottom of the power steering pump. Sorry for bad pic, I was at Wal-Mart and didn't have my tools with me.

Looks like the P/S vacuum hoses. I believe these lines stabilize the idle rpm when turning. Something like that.
The previous owner of my LS removed them.

Its for the power steering idle up valve. Its to vacuum assist the steering while at idle. Its a worthless part that WILL fail and leak everywhere. $6 oil drain plug from a 1.8T VW will block it off and then you route those two hoses together - which will be the manifold to the T where the IACV split is.

Thanks. Do I put the drain plug in the broken hose. What do you mean by route two hoses together?

Follow those two hoses down to the powersteering pump - the sensor they connect to you unscrew from the pump and screw the drain plug into there.

And routing the hoses together means once that sensor is gone, then the two hoses going to it are worthless. so you find where they go on the manifold and run a hose from one of them directly into the other - like that valve was never even there. boom - done.

When i removed my valve a good amount of ps fluid came out - i was prepared for this and had a plastic bag stuffed around my alternator for protection. suggest you do the same.
I used a M14x1.50 oil pan bolt, and it sticks out miles but it's doing the job with some teflon tape

you can get a specialty bolt - I got one with a rubber o ring machined into the lip and it was $6 on ebay - quick and easy, but yes it will dump some fluid out because the valve is under the reservoir and that pesky gravity

or you can replace the hose! as stated it's a vacuum line so a replacement should be pretty straightforward even with an aftermarket generic piece from autozone/pep boys. bring in the old part so you get the right size and length.

First thing I did when I bought my used/abused 1996 ls400 was to plug back in both hoses that were hanging loose from that sensor. Of course shortly after that my car started smoking like crazy from the oil going back into the intake. So, I think the best proactive thing would be to put a bolt in place of the sensor. I had an old drain bolt that fit perfectly and didn't cost a thing. I just plugged up the ends of the two hoses.

Home depot (and possibly lowes) carries the bolt if you're in a hurry for one. Just a couple of bucks. I ended up removing the hoses completely and capping the nipples off at the iintake/manifold. I can see this system being useful on a smaller motor that needs more TQ at idle but these V8's are just fine without it.

Thanks for all help guys. I think I will end pluging up the sensor and getting rid of the hoses. :-)
