i ain't buying that the brakes weren't able to handle the cold start idle lol... your car also doesn't have VSC, that was added in 1998
to answer timmy's question, the VSC is still working fine. no matter what the car won't be great in snow but the VSC is definitely still doing it's job

Its not that the brakes wont handle the idle, you just beed to hold the brakes a little harder than you'd think.

I also struggle to keep mine in one place if its cold idling - but my brakes are garbage. I've been doing fine in the last 2 IL winters with all seasons. Just gotta remember to keep a bunch of stuff in the trunk and don't get too cocky.

Floridian here. drove my 90 LS400 in the snow in MD years ago. not fun. drove my 95 in the snow too one year same area. bottom line is that the Ls400 is absolutely horrifying to drive in the snow..

I love driving mine in the rain. if you don't know how the car really really well it can be scary in the rain. ive been driving ls400s since 01 so I know exactly what to expect from them

the tires i think make a big difference. having the blizzaks in the snow makes a huge difference over the turanzas. and before i got the new wheels i had eagle rs-a's on the original wheels and they were definitely worse in the rain than the turanzas.
it doesn't necessarily help all that much if it's icy but i find the VSC can help a bunch in the rain. you can throw the car into a sharp turn, floor it, and it'll just give ya a little smack and get you back into shape.

Snow tires make all the difference.

The issue is not the VSC it's the traction control. VSC is very helpful in the snow, the way it cuts off an oversteer situation is really incredible. But with the RWD the trac retards the power so much it's very hard to get going.
Issue is you have to defeat VSC to defeat TRAC.

My 1999 LS has seen 10 Colorado Rockies winters. I have original wheels with snow tires, 18" off2005 LS430 with all-seasons. With dedicated snow tires and VSC it is pretty good, Tires make all the difference. I put 2 bags of sand in trunk for better traction. I do know LS's limitations, it's not an AWD, but with good winter tires it is better than most FWD.

true. RWD is always better than FWD. FWD cars sketch me out. atleast with RWD you can recover from a skid and have some hope but once you go into a skid with FWD its just over. theres no way out of it and ur gunna crash and burn. go go LS400!!!

Most people believe FWD cars are better in the snow because they are easier to get moving. In reality you're right, having the drive wheels and the steer wheels be the same in snowy and icy conditions isn't a great combination.

yep total myth. I really hate FWD cars. they never should have happened. kind of like having a front tire blowout in one on the highway. that never ends well...
