'Mods' are short for modifications.

Ever heard of the mod bug? It's the always progressing desire to change your car to fit your personal tastes. These modifications can come in fthe form of engine upgrades, styling changes, suspension upgrades or whatever else you can think of. Usually the mod bug strikes after your first change to your car. It doens't have to be a big thing either - It could be an air freshner!

The 'airbox mod' is not specific to one car. I'd say that any car that has a box (plastic or metal) surrounding the air filter on the intake to your engine could be a candidate for an airbox mod. In the LS forums I'd give credit to JBrady who made a cutout to the stock plastic air filter cover to provide better air flow into the engine. With this kind of modification a deeper tone is produced when you step on the gas. In JBrady's case this change gave him some extra HP. Here is a picture of the cutout on the stock filter housing.

Lee, that pic is of another members 1st gen car that he cut a hole in the box. My mod uncovers the entire front of the air filter. Here is the thread for details:

Cool, you found your way here. Jbrady is the guy to talk to about both mods. Good luck.

well thats kinda dumb, because wont you lose your luxury aspect of silencing the mufflers? you know?

I like the air filter idea... it sounds pretty cool...

So let me get this straight.. I cut out one side of the plastic thing that holds the air filter.. so theres colder air that goes through? what about the part in your thread about the headlamp... also will this increase the chance of getting dust particles in my engine? it shouldnt because its still a oem filter.. rite?

I'm sorry for being slow.. i jsut dont want to make irreversible changes and regret it.. u knwo

I wouldn't call mufler delete dumb but it is not for everyone. Stock filter should tske good care of all the dust so I would not worry about it.

Like Retro said. Everyone have their own taste. "DUMB" is a bad word. It has 4 letters. If you want performance, you will have to sacrify something. There is not free lunch.

I'm no expert and have never attempted to calculate filtration capabilities on the stock filter so I can't be so positive about everything.

The stock filter is designed to filter 'best' for the car. Any modification that opens this area could theoretically pull more dirt/dust into your engine, but your car already does this through the stock air dam behind the grill. By opening the front of the filter you still leave the filter housing on which is connected to that air dam. The hole *should* flow more air directly to the front of the filter using JBrady's design. Dust intake occurs even with the stock filter and is most likely negligeable.

K&N filters (which are another story) are an open cone design. An idependant test by a BMW owner (posted her on CL a while back) showed that a considerable amount of dust and dirt flowed through the K&N filter. But that's another story. You should be safe making this slight modification, but do think about the long road consequences of cutting your filter housing. Will you sell the car in the future? If so, the buyer may not want that modficiation. Replacing the housing could be costly as it may not come in just one piece.

The exhaust modification that JBrady suggested consisted of removing the rear mufflers for a performance gain. The stock rear mufflers are told by many to be extremely restrictive to air flow. Basically, this is why your car is so quiet. Many LS owners here have experimented with their exhausts and you may be suprised to see (or hear) that with a different exhaust your car actually sounds like a V8 - which it is!

Personally I have experimented quite a bit with the basic ideas with modifying the airbox and exhaust. Your car can sound considerably different with some of these mods and possibly produce more power. Try them out - you may like it!
