Ok, next mini project.

Hardwood trunk floor. What do you think?

Thoughts? Comments?

I can only say that I will have an issue with the spare tire removal if I make a small door in the hardwood for the tire, because the mat in the trunk will be beneath the hardwood floor. (there are two mats, one is supportive [the lower one], one is probably for sound deadening). The lower of the two mats has hard pieces of plastic in it in strategic areas and I do not want to cut that mat.

So I think I will have to cut the floor into three pieces and hinge it up so I can remove it from the trunk without hitting the sides of the opening because I will one day need my spare tire haha.

Below is a pic of one example, but again I cannot do that door thing with mine because of the mat underneath... ... ... unless I remove that mat altogether....thoughts?

 

it's a good idea to split it into at least two pieces so you can access the spare. also if in one piece it will be heavy and will not fit the trunk opening as easily.

i did three pieces for my air tank, though i covered it in carpet instead of hardwood flooring. i simply took the factory carpet as a template and cut away. all the compressors and valves are at the spare tire location for easy access.

 

I am also planning on a 3 piece and may cut it JUST LIKE YOURS!

I seen this done before on a GS in a car show. They where in the VIP section.. it actually look's pretty cool. Especially if you add the door for you tire.. Great idea ..I Also seen it done with Carbon Fiber . Something little different.

 

Its been done a fair bit but i'm not a huge fan, too impractical for me to have anything I put in the trunk slide from side to side.

 

Funny I was planning on doing this also and just put the OEM mat on top.

 

I was planning on doing something similar in my BMW, I'm interested to see in done in a LS.

 

Ok so to solve the issue of what to do with the lower mat (the one with the hard plastic pieces for support):

Instead of cutting into it to accommodate the door I want (to gain access to the spare tire), I will put that mat on TOP of the hardwood floor (when storing something in the trunk, and the hardwood floor (and its plywood or particleboard supporting piece) would substitute the bottom mat.


Thoughts?

I could always cut the mat and leave it under the floor....I have a 'top' mat I can put on top of the floor when using the trunk to store stuff..

Sounds like a terrible idea to me, I see no point unless this is a show car, even then I think the factory floor looks way better, but to each his own.

 

what lower mat are you referring to (with the hard plastic pieces for support)? my hardwood is sitting directly on top of the factory stuff and the spare can still be easily accessed. also all the factory under liners are intact on my car.

the reason i cut the floors where they are is for support. the edges of the wood all sit on the factory ledges especially the 'frame rail' of the trunk. i can put heavy stuff in my trunk and the wood will not buckle or bend. wood selection is important, in my case moreso since i don't have a spare tire to support the factory floor (which is simply cardboard).

 

here is how my trunk looks w/o the top floor layer. notice all the factory liners intact, and i only made slits so the air lines and wiring could pass through. i left the jack and tools there since it helps support the floor.

Ok I see what you mean.
The mats I refer to are on top of what you are showing me.

I have 2:
1. The lower (underneath) mat lies on top of the spare tire and has thin pieces of hard plastic in it for support.
2. The top mat is just a regular trunk mat with a LEXUS logo on it.

I didn't want to cut the bottom mat because it has hard plastic in it.

And yes LargeFarva it is just for looks.
I almost never use my trunk and at least this way it looks as nice as Lucille drives (her name is Lucille...fyi)

 

Here you can see the 'bottom' mat. You can also see the highlights and shadows indicating the hard plastic inside.

The second pic is the 'top' mat. which is just an OEM mat. (previous owner ruined it with bleach I think)
