first two things I would do, is drain & fill on both oil and tranny
for oil - use any big name full synthetic in 5W-30 or 0W-30 viscosity such as Pennzoil Ultra, Pennzoil Platinum, Mobil 1, Valvoline SynPower, Quaker State Ultimate Durability, Castrol Edge or Syntec - avoid 10W-30, 10W-40, 15W-40, and 20W-50 grades.
for a list of great oil filters, have a look in post #1 here
for transmission drain and fill, you want a brand new drain bolt and gasket from the dealership (about $5 for the pair) and I would pick up 4 quarts of genuine Toyota T-IV fluid while I was there, although you will probably only need 3 of them unless you let it drain overnight, but better to have an extra quart on hand than be short.
to get the level right, first use the cold mark on the dipstick, adding a bit at a time after the first 2 quarts, then once it is at the top of the cold range, take the car out for a 20 minute drive and come back and top it up with engine running in Park, on a very level surface, and go through each gear before performing the check in Park. (slightly overfilled - an 1/8 inch or less over the hot range is preferable to underfilled.)
make sure to change both sets of fluids with engine and tranny hot
never trust the previous owner when they say things like "all fluids were recently changed" - you have no idea what garbage oil or tranny fluid is currently in there on a used car.

the best conventional "regular" oil I know of is Pennzoil in the classic yellow bottle - it's dirt cheap at Wal-mart
just be sure to stick with 5W-30 or 0W-30
if anyone thinks that is too thin for an old car (such as your Dad) have them go bone up on why this is a common myth at Motor Oil University

The greatest confusion is because of the way motor oils are labeled. It is an old system and is confusing to many people. I know the person is confused when they say that a 0W-30 oil is too thin for their engine because the old manual says to use 10W-30. This is wrong.
