Looking for more horsepower! Any ideas?
What's up guys... looking to do a performance upgrade on my 97 ls400. Im wanting to bring up my hp another 100-150 Not looking for "off the line" performance, I want more top end. Im looking to keep all upgrades low key... no loud exhaust. Budget to start off... 5k. Please, if possible, attach links to any parts suggested to buy. Remember, this is an everyday driver. Look forward to hearing from you.
If you have any experience with your upgrades... Please share.

I'd say the best way for your budget would be do go with a procharger setup. The prochargers are a little bit noisy (they wine) but you should be able to get an easy extra 100hp out of it. There is a lot more to it than just the procharger but for a daily driver I think that would be the best way to go.

http://www.lextreme.com/perf.html I don't know much about trying to add power to these cars but I would start on lextreme if you haven't already.

Well.... The thing is you are going to have to sacrifice something for the power you want. Just about all of the superchargers wine. If you went Turbo, it can easily be done in your budget but its ALOT of fab work and is IMO going to take away that whole every day driver feel. Not saying you couldn't drive it everyday.
The only other reasonable option other than turbo/supercharger would be nitrous. It would be the cheapest to install too. I love nitrous, except for the re-filling of the bottles part!

define your goal. 100hp is almost definitely out without you fabricating stuff yourself (ie- turbo setup) or going down the nitrous route.
Otherwise, a well planned exhaust, headers, and intake, along with a tune (piggyback efi) and possibly cams will help you go a long way.

I agree with PD. With your budget you could have some nice headers built and have a nice exhaust done. That with the intake a tune will bump you up a bit. Still not anywhere near the 100HP mark. IMO with this motor its either go all out or don't expect much at all....
If you go with turbo/supercharger/nitrous it might take away from the reliability of the car. If you went with the simple stuff, you will get an increase but not what you have in mind.

I think 100hp was biting more than I wanted to chew. I think your other option of intake, headers, etc... is where I want to be at. Where do I begin, what to install first and where to find the products to fit my car. Im ready to research and understand what im about to do. I want to create power that this motor can handle without being too hard on it. But the few times I want to get on it... it will GO.

With mods like intakes and exhaust you can make more power and it be good for the motor. Think of an engine as an air pump, and when you add those mods it makes it easier to breath/pump air.
I'm not 100% sure if they will fit the LS, but I have seen the SC400 guys using the ebay headers for their cars. Might have to modify them for the LS though.
