Ladies and gentlemen, we have a decision!
Thanks to all who contributed to my original post...in brief, I was trying to decide whether to keep my 99 LS400 or to buy something new (read: different). After test-driving a variety of cars, weighing the value of being payment-free but facing possible repairs, we took the LS into the dealership and asked them for a laundry list of what was wrong with it (they did this as a courtesy with an oil change). There is surprisingly little to repair at this time (knock wood). I am going to let my mechanic handle the bigger stuff that requires more heavy lifting (water seal plate and bypass hose replacement) and have my ASE-mechanic brother handle the rest (replace radiator, fluids, and spark plugs). I will change the cabin air filter and engine filter myself. (I think I can handle that.) I still love driving the car, it still looks terrific, and I don't have to worry about another monthly payment with two kids in college... I really appreciate everyone's information and pointing out things to watch out for. It made it a lot easier for them to take a good look at the car. While I know that things can still go wrong, it's good to know I'm doing what I can to bring her up to snuff. A new car is no guarantee of a perfect experience: my inlaws have a car (not a Lexus) that is a year old which needs the engine replaced due to an oil issue. Yes, it's covered, but what a pain!

Bad call. You should have sold it to me! No, wait, perform your maintenance list first!
Actually a stellar decision ... just looking for the right somebody to make the opposite choice.

Very level headed and logical decision. And good example for all of us. Take the time to get the right info to make a decision, just as you did. I hope it will last you many more years. You already know you enjoy it.
