considering buying a '98 LS 400
LS 400 with 118k miles. has had the timing belt and water pump changed recently and has 10k miles them. I am negotiating with a dealership for this car in the 5500-6000 range. Does this seem to be a fair price and should I be checking anything else with the car before I proceed.
Thanks for your help. I have a '92 LS 400 that I may have for sale later-the dealership only offered me $ 500.00 trade-in. Car drives out OK and the air works good. Great exceleration.

Jerry...
I bought a 99 with more miles from an individual last year and paid more... so your numbers appear to be sound, depending on the overall condition of the car. Mine was pristine with no signs of wear and all maintenance done on time.
There is a thread here that has a list of what to look for on these older cars. I'd put the vin into the lexus site and verify the maintenance performed.
And the 92 is certainly worth more than $500... Good luck and don't forget to post pics.

the condition of the driver's seat will tell you a lot about the kind of life the car has led, my LS had 110k and the driver's seat looked like a new one.
I think I would sell the '92 privately for $2000 or so

i paid more for my 97 and it had more miles so you are in good shape, depending on the rest of the car's condition. car prices vary with location, so it's really hard to tell but that sounds like a decent deal to me. as mentioned, you can use lexus.com and put the VIN number in to see the service history.

My white 99 cost 7000$ in 2010 with 140k on it, and my black 99 cost 4500$ the first of the year, with 228k but it had some problems. previous owner was told it needed WP/TB job and CEL light was on plus it needed license & inspection so he just bailed out. It took a month but I fixed it for about 150$ and it will not need WP/TB for another 27K, and that is 4 or 5 years for me. so yours is a reasonable deal especially with those miles..

The prices are going down as they age, naturally. I paid $8,000 for my 99 with 68k on it a little over a year ago. He wanted 10 but I was able to get it for 8. IMO, private owner is always a better way to go if possible. Engine is just getting broken in...

My father bought my '99 with 88k miles on it for about $7k plus dealer fees and I'm not even sure whether it's had the timing belt/water pump changed. That price sounds fairly reasonable, but try shooting for $5,500. In my father's case, he was negotiating with the dealer for almost a month and got him down from his original price of ~$12k.
