Default Tranny cooler with/without radiator?

I need to replace my radiator in the near future, and I want to add in a trans cooler while I'm in there. I'm curious, is it necessary to run the tranny cooler inline with the radiator? Or can you run it just by itself? If you had a decent sized cooler would it be enough to keep the trans cool?

The reason I ask, is because I was playing with the idea of running an aluminum supra radiator. I found some at a decent price but they are for a manual trans (no trans cooler built in). Thanks in advance for any info...

you can run a standalone transmission fluid cooler fine if you want to run a manual trans aftermarket radiator.

On another car I ran a air cooler only, it worked fine.

The only downside is that the temperatures will fluctuate when using air only.
