I have a 91 and recently the power steering has been acting up. i drained the fluid and cleaned thr screen in the bottom of the resavoir. the fluid was very dark like oil was in it. there are no leak and i recently changed the steering rack so i don't think that is the problem. anybody have anu idea why it would be acting up? If you are not leaking anywhere I would start with a proper flush. Did you purge the air out of the system? Check out this guide.

Once all the old fluid has been flushed from the system, connect the return hose back to the reservoir. Then fill it up with new ATF. Leave the cap off and start the car. Turn the steering wheel slowly from lock to lock several times. Doing this will help to remove any air bubbles in the system.
The purge should be done with the wheels off the ground and you may need to turn the wheels from lock to lock more then several times.

I would just change the whole pump out too. I had some "issues" with mine when i first bought it as well, and the pump, even though it didn't make any funny noises or anything, was totally shot.

You need to replace the hoses they break down from the inside out and the inside lining fails which causes the hose to act like a flapper valve keeping the fluide from returning to the pump or from the pump to the rake.

Flushed the fluid helped a little bit. the fluid looked like it was burnt like thr pump was burning it up. im just going to replace the whole thing. i replaced all the hoses before when i had a leak a while back.

Yeah, the chances are good the fluid has NEVER been replaced, as it's not a common maintenance issue that people actually get done
