Default New member needing advice '91 or '01?

OK so, I have a 95 LS and looking at two options here for another Lex. I'm looking at a 92 LS original owner, all maintenance done at the dealer and up to date with 159K mi always garaged (this thing looks brand new). Or an 2001 LS 142K original owner all maintenance done at the dealer (with the exception of never having the timing belt done) for twice as much than the 92. please give me your input i really like both styles so new or old is not an issue i just want advice for the better purchase (i've been looking for another Lex going on a year now)

How much is "twice as much?" These are two COMPLETELY different vehicles in just about every way possible.

I think it will depend on your taste.

Both cars seam real nice. But the 92 is $5k less expensive and leaves you money to play with it. (tint, rims, radio, ect.)

I looked at a 01 but I did not care for the headlight style.

In my opinion, if you are going to shell out $10k for another few thousand look at a 04 ls430.
I think the style of the 04 is more appealing.

It will also get better gas mileage with the newer tranny, and be quicker with the newer 4.3

Also the options of the 04 are pretty sweet. Heat/air seats, folding mirrors, rear sun screen, xenon headlights, ect.

I was about to get the 04 but got a screening deal on a 2000.

Two very different cars. For the safety aspect, the LS430.

The 430 has more/better:
MPG
higher performing engine
trunk space
front and rear leg room
nicer audio system if ML equipped
other trim options that weren't on the 1-LS.
HID headlights
improved sound insulation

You will also be able to find interior parts with a 3-LS where the 1-LS is becoming scarce from the dealer. Take a replacement seat belt for example, your available color choice is black and maybe navy.

the 2001 is the better car, many advances in safety, performance, and convenience since 92, however the 2001 generation is more effeminate looking to me, the 90-00 models are much more MANLY looking! - Is it for you or your gal?

Ive looked at my cars *** and a 01+ *** side by side and I like the more muscle look over elegant 01+ look. Maybe cause my flush mount wing and slightly pulled quarters.

I would be thinkin about the timing belt on the 01.That will need attention right off the bat. At 10K or so, I would keep looking. Unless you can do the work yourself.

I've had a 1992 and a 2001 LS. As posted by others, two different vehicles, but the 430 is clearly an evolution of the same incredible philosophy. I'm looking for a car for my daughter. Gotta have side air bags (torso at least), so that means 97 and up. My observation is that an early 430 is about 1.5 x the cost of a later 400 in similar miles/condition. I'm talking $6 k vs. $9k in very general terms, for about a 125,000 mile car in nice shape. If you're not in a hurry, I think you'd be pleased to save another three grand or so and get into a 430. That's $300 bucks a month for 10 months interest-free (interest earning maybe?) while you keep your eyes open. That's my approach right now. In the mean time, if I run into a 1998 driven to church by a little old lady every other Sunday for six grand, then it's a done deal and I have some cash in the bank. Either way, the kid is stylin' compared to the 95 Volvo that she proved herself in, and has a lot more car (and safety) than the econo boxes that many of her peers drive (that cost daddy at least 2 x what I'm looking at). At the end of the day, either LS is a great car for the money as you already know.

The timing belt being neglected on that '01 would be concerning as well as any other info you found on that VIN. Keep searching, there are enough out there that have been cared for but the older ones will become challenging as time continues. If you are willing to spend, the better odds will be '98-'06.
