So, let me introduce myself. I'm Tom from The Netherlands and I do not own a Lexus. So why register on a Lexus forum?

Well, I own a '78 Ford LTD 2door lowrider that I got some Lexus LS400 memory seats for. They'll be incorporated in the custom interior I'll be building for it. Obviously my car is a 2 door and the LS400 is a 4 door. That's why I opted for the memory seats, so that I can program position 1 as my driving position and position 2 as everything forward, as to let passengers in the back.

Now my questions are:

Is there a way to 'trick' the memory seat computer into working without the signal from the tilt & telescopic ECU? So what I'd like is to have a fully functioning memory seat that works without the tilt & telescopic and without the mirrors.

Also, I will be taking off the headrests and have the seats reupholstered without headrests. Will this cause any problems with functionality (headrest motor sensor)?

The seats I got are out of a '91 I believe.

I hope some of the LS400 gurus can help me out with this one.

Sounds like a cool project, but the only way I would know is to probe the communication between the components and see if you can create a dummy signal.

I'm surprised that it won't work without those signals, but I could see reasons for that.

Well yeah, I was thinking of something like that too. I know that on some cars of this era (BMW E34 for example) it's a simple as grounding out the signal wire that goes to the seat ECU.

But the LS400's seem a little more complicated since they have a second ECU for the steering wheel and I'm afraid of frying my seat ECU if I just go grounding out the signal wires.

the headrests should be fine. i believe the ECU just saves the duration of the motors and does not have any sensors to worry about so it wouldn't matter if the headrests were there or not.

as for the tricking signals and ECU, i have no idea. i never knew the seats worked in hand with the steering wheel motors.

From what I found out, the memory function works in conjunction with the tilt & telescopic ECU (that registers steering wheel and mirror position). If the connection to the steering wheel is bad or whatever, the memory function stops working because the seat ECU doesn't get information regarding steering wheel position from the tilt & telescopic ECU.
