4" front door replacement speakers ctx-4
i put this post on an avalon forum, but thought it wouold be useful to ls owners as they also have 4" stock door speakers. last winter i put jbl 428's in all four ls doors, and they sound pretty good. got a good deal on them from another member of this forum.
1998avalon xls with the jbl (premium) system which has a subwoofer. fronts were dead. rears are stock component system speakers. i got image dynamics ctx-4 (4" coax) speakers from sagoutlet on ebay for $52.xx with free shipping.
the sound of these speakers, even with them not fully covering the 4" hole, is stupendous. i had always heard that image dynamics was way ahead of the competition. they are. the tweeter is somewhat adjustable, so angle it up and towards the driver and passenger. this brings the staging more to the forefront. a reason i settled on these rather than others is BECAUSE they are only rated to go down to 100hz. IF YOUR SUB IS WORKING, YOU DON'T WANT TO WASTE POWER AND MOTION IN THE 4" CONES WHEN THEY ARE TRYING TO MAKE MORE BASS. the sub will do that. let the mids do what they do, which is primarilly voices. I think the angled tweeters are just as good as the factory tweets, even though they are in the coax form. they are silk dome and don't have any harshness that metal tweeters have. the sound of these speakers actually enhances the sub, by proividing such a full spectrum of tones and clarity, and good separation.
i can't wait for the rear door speakers to die.
i'd buy image dynamics again in a heartbeat. if i had decided to save a few bucks, i'd have gotten the boston accoustics se45 speakers from crutchfield for $40.00 per pair. but i wouold highly recommend the image dynamics speakers for someone who just wants excellent sound, without the expense of components.

Over the weekend I took out the door panel. The speaker cone itself is 4.5", with the bracket I measured 5.5", speaker hole in the door is 4.75" which is about the same for most 5.25" speakers. I plan to replace the front speakers with Pioneer TS-A1304C 5.25" components.
