Question about tire size... LS430 rims on 1998 LS400 *with pics*
okay, so i got some LS430 wheels about 8 months ago.... didnt want to put them on just yet cuase the tires on my current 16in wheels were brand new MKV4.... wanted to wear them out a bit first.
so it looks like its that time to look to change them now, and i wanted to know what tire size should i use to put on the 17in 2002 LS430 wheels... i wanted to use some tires that will fill the gap up a bit that the current wheels have on the car.
What size do you guys recommend that will make it look a lot better and also handle good.
Thanks...
This is for 2002 LS430 17in silver wheels going on a 1998 LS400 with current 16in wheels.
Main reason im asking is becuase i saw someone that had a 98-00 and they put the LS430 wheels with the factory size tires, and with that combo it looked funny cause the tires were too small and it looked awkward. Def looked like the rims didn't belong. Im thinking the series should be bigger so it fills in the gap better.
My LS400 is totally factory. BTW this is the same car from the project late last year. Some additions have been, brand new shocks all around and the wood wheel.
I plan on redoing the emblems all chrome (the new LS430 wheels has chrome emblems on the wheels) and also a new grill with chrome emblem.

My opinion is that if you want to fill the gap you really need to lower it, here's why.
Just putting on bigger wheels with the same OD tires as OEM will make the car sit taller (there is less sidewall flex).
If you then put on bigger tires it will sit even taller.
For the record I went with slightly bigger OD tires on my 18s 255/45/18, but I'm on Tanabes (no rubbing).
I suggest you just use the OEM LS430 size even though that's not what you asked.

well im not really wanting to lower the car... but i totally see your saying now...
Actually quite surprised i didn't put those two together prior to posting on fourm... just thought maybe there was a tire size that is better for the LS400 with the LS430 17in wheels.
any other thoughts anyone?

As mentioned, the stock diameter will be the proper size. If you want a bit more width a 245/50-17 will give you a near identical diameter. You will have the same gap from tire to fender unless you go larger or smaller diameter tires then you will have more noticeable speedometer errors.

I was never a fan of the standard 98-00 LS400 16" wheels or the similar dull finish 97 LS400 Coach Edition 16" wheels. I have to say that those 17" inch LS430 wheels look particularly good on your silver LS400.
Forget about eliminating that "gap" in the wheel arch and leave that for the "ricers".

+1 Drive it as it as and see how you like.
Wheel fitment is a subject that comes with all the other mods. If you want a basic transport car don't start messing with it. Invariably it is one trade-off for another.
If you do decide go down that path, 10-15mm is conservative for the rears and would match with the fronts. Up to you.
