New LS400 owner!!!!
Hey all, I have been lurking here for a week or 2 , once I decided on getting another Lexus (I previously owned a 1992 SC400 a couple of years ago - it went 15.22 @ 92 mph for you drag racers out there). Anywho I just picked up a 1991 LS 400 with 99,000 miles on it for 9900.00. The vales are making a loud noise on the drivers side cyl head - I went to my local dealer and asked about just adjusting the valve(s) that are noisy, instead of doing them all (700.00), and they said the only way they would touch it is if I did them all. Mind you the car was purchased and maintained at this dealer. The other problem is the tachometer doesnt read correctly - i.e if you give it full throttle, the tach will only go up to 4000 rpm (slowly) and when the car is idling it barely reads above 0 rpm (anyone else have a lagging tach?) - and for those that have had the valve noise - did you have them all adjusted , or just the noisy one(s). Thanks in advance, and you guys will be seeing me around here more often!

Welcome new owner!
I would case the Lexus dealership to find a service tech who likes to moonlight on the side :-) I got lucky where I live and found a Toyota Master mechanic who will do most work for 1/3 to 1/2 the money my local Stealer charges.
The biggest thing I have figured out is that the more you know about any given mechanical problem the less it will cost you. It just seems that naive people who dont understand will be taken advantage for sure. This board seems to be the perfect place to get the info we all need to fill in the blanks.
Good luck and welcome aboard
