I finally have a pretty good handle on what the VIN and Modelcodes are.
You can find them on the VIN plate on the dirver's door frame.

e.g. (from a 1991):
U = Engine Code (from VIN) ??? U would be 1UZ-FE
CF = Chassis designation
1 = 90-94, 2 = 95-00, 3 = 01-06 (LS430)
0 = No factory air suspension, 1 = with factory air suspension (01 is not used in the US market)
L = Left-hand drive, R = Right-hand drive
-
A = LS400
E = 4-door Sedan
P =4-speed Automatic transmission
G =Grade B
K = Compact DOHC & SFI
A = US, K = Canada

Thanks.to everyone who has contributed, especially PureDrifter and Yamae-san.

UCF20L
U=engine code, hence the GS300 was JZS and the GS400 was UZS
CF=Chassis Code
1/2/3=Generation. for the LS400 it's '89-94=1, '95-00=2, and the LS430 gets '01-06=3
0/1=Air suspension or Ultra lux rear seat package (LS430/eurasian LS400 only)
L/R= Left or Right hand drive.

the rest applies to destination market and country.

Thanks, PureDrifter.
Do you know of any source for decoding the destination market codes?
Color me a curious computer geek.

my Corolla GTS is an AE86 or 86 for short, it's a car community bonding thing, yea sometimes there's a gazillion variations of cars and it might be easier to say what it is but usually there's nick names for things like that
