The wife's 96 LS400 stopped running today with out any warning. She pulled up, shut the car off, 30 minutes later it will not start. Seems to be a fuel issue. The car will only run on starting fluid. Tomorrow I will break a fuel line loose to verify fuel is making it to the fuel rails.I have read many posts with regards to this issue. I am hoping to get some help with a few questions.

1.) Where is the fuel relay located and how can I test it?
2.) I have read about jumping the B+ to the F terminal. Where can this be done at?
3.) How does the back seat come out, I can not find any instructions for the 96?

same rear seat removal as earlier cars. if its not firing at all its more likely to be a fuel pump issue (if the ECU has been ruled out)

 

1) The relay is located in the relay box in engine compartment.
2) In the black "diagnostic" box under the hood. Should be right on top of engine, drivers side. (going by my '93.) Open the box and the +B is the front right (drivers side) terminal and FP is the front left terminal. To check the fuel pump connect the 2 terminals, turn ignition switch on, (do NOT start) check if there is pressure in the fuel inlet hose by pinching it. Also, you will hear fuel return noise. Also, the screw on the top of the fuel pressure pulsation damper will jump when there's pressure. (if the 96 has one. Again, I'm going by my 93)
3) The link PureDrifter gave ya shows the seat removal.

Checked the fuel pressure this morning. It has plenty. Checked the relay. It tested OK. The car started right up. Nothing like an intermittent failure, you got to love it. To Drive or Not to Drive, is the million dollar question!!

Can the fuel pumps be intermittent or are they either good or bad?

I hate to give you bad news but, I've heard alot of the fuel pumps being intermittent right before they fail. That doesn't mean it will fail though. It's a craps shoot.
