Default 1997 LS400 - Hard to change CV Boots?

I am looking at a '97 ls400 140K miles for $3500. I have not found out about the timing belt or water pump; those may be deciding factors.

The owner says the CV Boots need replacing and there is an exhaust leak.

How hard is it replace the CV Boots? Chase down the exhaust leak? I'm an OK mechanic and don't mind doing the work, just don't want to get in over my head with a car that won't run.

Thanks for any thoughts.

exhaust should be just time and a few $$$, unless it is the EGR pipe.
CV boot kit is about $40. and they are hard to install.... for me.

Just replace the whole axle shaft if the boot is bad. Available at most scrap yards for cheap. I needed to replace my left, but was sent one for the right. So I have that if you need it.

thanks for the replies. CV boots - there are tears. I like replacing the whole axle; takes care of a bunch of problems.

I did find out the timing belt has not been done; that is more expense than i am willing to get into at the moment. I am going to pass on this one.

Thanks for all your help!

The CV joints on these car are same as others - but it's a little tricky on these and it's a big job. The inboard joints are Birfields like on the older Land Cruisers and the outboard joints are conventional type found on FWD cars. If you're going to do this, do the bushings and wheel bearings while you're at it.
