91 ls400 Cam Seals leaking. help.
I've recently had a horrible leak, that has been identified by a mechanic that its the cam seals. He gave me an estimate of roughly $400-$500. Is this average?
Also if I'm going to go through with the work, is there anything else that i might want to consider having replaced?
The car has roughly 130k. thanks for your time!

The cam seals are usually part of the timing belt job. If you're going in there ya might as well think about doing your timing belt/water pump job. Seeing how the cam seals are only about $10 each, 95% of that price your mechanic gave you is labor. You'd really kick yourself if you still use the old t-belt/water pump and it decides to go the next week. You'll just have to pay it all over again. If you do decide to do the T-belt then also do the crankshaft seal. Here's a tutorial on the T-belt. http://www.lexls.com/tutorials/engine/timingbelt.html It doesn't show the seals but they are only 10 more minutes work. Too bad you aren't closer, I would do it for less labor then that.

My gs400 is in the same boat, taking it in today to get timing belt seals water pump etc done. My uncle is doing it for me @$500 including the parts kit to do all that. He said he normally charges $600-700 including the parts and does them in the better part of a full day. GL w/yours Im bummed.

a mechanic diagnosed my oil leak as cam seals but it turned out to be from the rear plug in the head on the drivers side which dripped down on a loom and traveled to the front of the engine. did ur mechanic have u put some dye in the oil? or did he take just look at the oil dripping?

spoke to him this morning, he visually diagnosed it when it was on the lift. I also asked him about 3 or 4 times just to verify lol.
good news, he's going to replace the cam and crank seals, timing belt +, and flush the tranny for under $700. Hopefully this will solve the majority of my problems.
Thanks to everyone who has replied. will update asap.
