a different rear suspension thunk clunk
i've got a '92 w/ 190k. just converted from air suspension to Arnott struts and did the work myself. There was plenty of noise from suspension before, but now that all is fixed (front upper and lower ball joints, control arms, new struts, etc..), there is a thunk or clunk from the rear - easily reproducible. it's caused by a side to side motion of the car. car hear at any speed when turning right to left or vice versa. or by pushing/pulling on rear tire- one can feel the clunk in the wheel. it's a simple single thunk as it moves right, then another as it moves back left. i've read up on the rear carrier bushings, and those symptoms don't seem to fit this issue. yes, the tire/wheel is tight- just checked. i'm also sure the top strut mount bolts are tight- plus the noise is lower, not near the rear deck. ideas/help, please?

Adus 583's maybe. Make sure the rear LCA's (2 per side, 19mm) where they connect to the subframe are tight. Should be 136ft lbs.
Get under the car and see where the movement is while someone else pushes/pulls on the wheel.

well, i put it on a rack at a lexus (non-dealer) shop, and we found a little loose/worn rear sway bar link and tightened it. it was moving a bit under load. to no avail... so far, we're stumped. one can pull back and forth on the rear wheel and feel the clunk, clunk.

By back and forth, I assume you mean from front to back? If so, the most likely culprit would be the ADUS 505 bushing... Unbolt the strut rod, #9, from the rear carrier arm (one 19mm bolt at the bottom of #2) and check the condition of the bushing inside #2...

jims,
no, i mean side to side. it's clearly a side to side issue- swerving back and forth produces the noise; standing by side of car and yanking back/forth on open trunk will make the noise; back/forth on tire while facing the tire does it....
pure-- i did it with some joints on the lift. will go back and do them all. i've been on here a lot, but don't know what ADUS means/ stands for? and the 505's 583's after them..? sorry if this is ignorant.
