My car 96 LS400 does the same thing when I put it into DRIVE, kinda surges a bit forward even though I have my foot on the brake.
I don't have the problem at 20mph though...

Can someone shed some light on this issue?

My guess is this only happens when the car is cold (just started)? The idle is elevated to speed up the heating of the engine, so it will tend to accelerate the car and coast a little bit more than when it is warm.

The lurching you feel is probably due to worn transmission mounts.

yes, amcdonal86 is right, i have a strong jerked feeling when puttin it into any drive gear(reverse or drive) when i first start it, i don't have that feeling when the car is warm though, it doesn't really bother me though.

hahah you guys are funny, the automatic drive gear in the tranny is spinning, when you change into drive the clutch grabbs and goes, simple as that. RPMS are higher in colder weather, prob over 1000, warm should be running 600
