Does the lever move or not?

It could be the brake light switch. Have you tried the shift override?

Do a "shift override" or "shift out of park" search with the quotes.

Pretty vague...
Was it drivable before? Any shifting issues before this?
Check tranny fluid level. If low, add more Type IV Toyota tranny fluid.

The obvious... Disengage parking brake, depress foot brake, move gear selector.

When you press the brake pedal you should hear a solenoid click from under the gear selector. Make sure your brake lights light up when pedal depression. If they do, suspect the gear selector lock solenoid under the selector. It should make a thunking noise when you depress the brake pedal. The thunk is the lock being retracted to allow the lever to leave the park position. It is a safety feature.

Default same car, same problem?

Since this guy has never responded, I'm hijacking this thread since I want to figure out the problem for my good friend's LS. He's got a '97 also, and the shift lever DOES move through the gears, however the trans is not shifting itself. What is going on here? Anyone have the same problem out there or know what we should check first? I know there's trans fluid in good shape, filled to the proper level in it...Car was totally driveable before. Please help..Thanks!
