1998 LS400 Timing Belt Part Number and General Questions
I have 125K on my 98 LS400. The timing belt was done at 75K but was about 7 years ago. I’ve had the car for about 6 months so I’m planning on doing it soon.
I was going to follow this tutorial since LexLS is for an older generation…

He lists the part numbers below. First, does this take care of everything? I have heard some people say to do the seals and others say to leave them alone. They aren’t leaking now so what do you recommend? I also have never seen a tutorial for them so would be unsure of how difficult it would be.
1) Belt, timing p/n 13568-09070 MBL
2) Pump, water p/n 16100-59275-83 (comes with gasket) Aisin
3) Idler #2 p/n 13503-0F010 Koyo
4) Idler #1 p/n 13505-0F010 Koyo
5) Tensioner p/n 13540-50030 NTN
6) Thermostat p/n 90916-03100 NTC
7) T/S gasket p/n 16325-62010 Ishino
8) Antifreeze per gallon (x2 = $36.38) p/n 00272-1LLAC-01
9) O-ring p/n 96761-24019 Ishino
10) Serp. belt
I'm going to order from Autohausaz
I did a search on their site for the above parts. I noted the manufacturers who make the parts above, they are listed as OEM but wanted opinions on if they are all good.
How many gallons of antifreeze do I need?
Finally, I am not sure whet Serp belt I need...

I did this work on my car at 95k miles. I did NOT replace the water pump or idlers. I now have 167k with no problems. The factory belt looked surprisingly good after 95k and 6 years.
Was the water pump and or idlers replaced when work was done before?
If it were my car I would drive it another 40k before doing this work or until the waterpump started leaking or idlers started getting noisy. You only have 50k on your belt now and maybe the other parts as well.

honeslty, the water pump is cheap since it can be had from toyota dealers (same wp is used on the 2uz tundra motor) and i would say do it since you're opening all that **** up anyways.
also, many people have had issues using aftermakrtet timing belts because many lack the correct (or worse, have incorrect) markings for the cam/crank positions.

my 99 TB kit-WP parts came from:

everything fit perfect, and the car runs fantastic.
cost about 170. for everything. we lined it all up and marked the gears before removing the belt and we just R&R'ed the belt, didnt move the crank... no problem.

I don't know if the water pump was done last time. The only reason I know the TB was done is because the engine has a sticker on it saying "Timing Belt changed @ _____ miles"
I know I could probably wait a little longer, I'm under in miles but over in time, with an interference engine I don't know if I should risk it.
The parts I listed aren't aftermarket are they? They say OEM.

I typed in all the part numbers and they all worked except for the gaskets so I think I am good to go.
What about the seals, do them or no? Tutorial?

As far as antifreeze, it will take about 1.25 to 1.5 gallons of the undiluted stuff (use Toyota red) mixed 50/50 with distilled water (not tap...don't want to ruin that nice, new pump). Total of about 2.5 gals of mixed depending on how well the system is drained. I just bought a gallon of the Toyota red for $20 off the dealer.
The serp belt is not critical like the timing belt. You can go to NAPA and get a decent belt for around $50.

I successfully did my timing belt change a couple weeks ago. The car has been running perfect. My timing belt, idlers and water pump all looked brand new. It turns out I misread when the timing belt was last done...it had only been 2.5 years and about 40,000 miles! I was pretty upset since I could've waited many more years but oh well, now I am fine to 200,000 miles, I have 127,000 right now.
Anyone interested in a pretty much new OEM timing belt, water pump and both idlers?
No guarantees but they all look great, idlers and water pump spin very well and freely with no looseness. $70 shipped...

Always replace a timing belt after inspection. Pop off a cover every 20 000 or once a year and look for freying or cracking , if it has none it is fine . It usually takes another 30-40000 before the belt has issues.
