After running Iridium plugs for a while my mileage has gone up to 24 miles with 25% in town and 75 freeway in Southern California with no bumper to bumper traffic the speed on the freeways in 60-65MPH my next try is for 25 to 27mpg you have to really ease the gas peddle I have talked to a few people who are driving very carefully and getting 28 to 30 MPG if that is possible what is the best gas mileage any of you have gotten who read this I was told today that gas will hit $5.00 and possible $6.00 soon some places here in California it's already $5.25 a gallon and still going up DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY GOOD IDEAS HOW WE CAN INCREASE THE MILEAGE ON OUR LEXUS BOTH OLD AND NEWER MODELS.

I have got a 92 lexus ls400 with 189k miles on it, and i get 430 to 450 miles on a full tank and that was with a broken number 2 spark plug wire. I use the cruise control alot and i drive both on high way at 55 to 70 and i do floor it when over taking.
I just changed the spark plugs but i must change the oil this week, i have never done the sea foam, but i heard walmart do it ! so what do you guys think? and what do you think about the four headed bosch spark plugs ?

Bill - Good point and question to improve efficiency. Gas prices in Houston are well below the West Coast but I too am trying to maximize efficiency out of my LS. Here is some perspective. I have 211,000 miles and drive my LS daily to the office (80 miles RT). It is 60% highway and the rest usual Houston gridlock. I average 24 to 26 MPG on a tank now. I am switching from double platinum NGK plugs to Denso long lasting iridium plugs and ignition wires this Saturday since they are due.
I use SeaFoam in the tank about every 3 mos and use Shell gas (with 5% MasterCard rebate) to keep the engine clean. I use a high efficiency WIX air filter rubbing open (Lexkost's idea). I recently had my car inspected and according to the computer my emmissions numbers were crazy low (I will post later). I believe the iridiums could yield an additional 1 MPG. Considering I am running very wide tires (245 front and 285 rear) with the vehicle lowered, averaging 25 to 27 MPG would be phenomenal for this car.
I drive on average 70MPH and would not say I am conservative on the throttle - seem to drive faster toward the weekend

Here in Spain I just done a 1000 mile trip. Using cruise on my 93 LS400 I filled up at the start and again about 25 miles after the gas warning light came on. At the end of all I was just short of seeing the warning light and had covered 1054 miles. By my reckoning that's well over 30mpg but I'm a slow driver at 65 mph and cruise is the key to mpg.

Real world MPG's on high mileage Gen1 LS's
What could I expect for a '93 with 200k + miles? City Driving mostly.
I love my 01 LS 430, thinking about getting a Gen 1 for a third car!
Thanks Guys!

While I don't have HIGH miles (117k), I get 16.6 ALL city, no even touching a highway... A/C on, 20" rims...and that was running 89 octane to see how it does on that (mine did fine, by the way). I have premium now, seein how much better, if any, it does!

anyhow with good driving and no modifications my '96 with 250k has seen 30mpg on the highway.
the LSs with the best mileage are probably the 98-00 model, with the extra gear in the trans and the vvti, but they also cost a solid amount more than the other models
not a knock on the 1st gen - the 1st gens are wonderful solid cars that are in some ways better than the 2nd gen - its just that they indulge in a little more gasoline in any given mile driven

165k on my 94. I once drove 90% city (bad bay area traffic) and got an all-time low of 17.1mpg. I usually get 19.5 with 50/50 city/hwy. My all-time high was 22mpg driving 90% highway. My driving style is a bit aggressive though, and my car maintenance hasn't been the best.
