Default Wider tires

I'm not exactly sure how tire and rim sizes work together, but on the 1st gen Ls's each tire is a 225 15R 65 I think..something like that. So how does one go about putting wider tires on? Is a new rim required? I'd like to do this for the rear someday and get similar sized tires to the BMW 7 series (275's i think). Do wider tires affect gas mileage and ride sensitivity/quality?
thx

I doubt that you can fit a 275 tire on stock rims. For 275 you will need aftermarket rims which would be the best move to improve the handling anyway. Drop the car too. My ride is pretty maneuvriable on stock rims with aftermarket shocks and springs.
