Default Won't start: clicking noises, erratic gauges

I have no idea what to do. When I tried to start our beautiful '99 LS400 several peculiar things happened: I heard loud series of fast clicks (the engine didn't turn over), the gauges began to flicker and then the speedo and tach needles started to bob up and down and then went out. I waited, tried again and got the same result followed by nothing at all when I tried to start it a third time.
For what it's worth, I can't get the shift lever out of park.

I'd appreciate any help you can give me.

Did you check the battery and made sure it was fully charged and terminals were tight?

Your battery is dead or the terminals are loose or corroded.

And after you have replaced or charged the bat., have your alternator tested or you'll end up in the same spot a week from now
