Default the one thing Toyota forgot . . .

After a week with my '98 LS, I am completely enthralled. So far none of those "surprises" you invariably get in the first few days with a new used car that let you know the real reason the prev. owner was unloading. And what a wonderfully designed car. Riding in them is one thing, but you really can't get the whole picture until its yours. I keep finding new features. Today it was the coin box on the dash. But one thing I don't understand is why no steering wheel audio controls? Older and lesser cars had them, like my '92 Legend. I did look at a '98 that had the factory phone, and it had additional controls on the left side of the steering wheel, but as best I could tell they were just for the phone.

I also had a 1992 Legend. I wish my '99 LS400 had heated mirrors like the Legend, it was a pretty handy feature on cold nights. Other than that, I can't complain one bit.

Your 99 should have heated mirrors...
My 94 has them and as far as I know, it has been a standard feature from the first LS400 in 1990.

Check your fuses maybe. The heat on the mirrors come on when the rear defogger or the windshield defroster is on.

The RL (Legend successor, more or less) still has the steering wheel audio controls and heated mirrors, or at least the ones I looked at did. I don't care so much about the audio controls (I can reach pretty easily), but the heated mirrors would be nice.

Edit: Hah, that's right, there are heated mirrors, controlled with the rear window defroster switch.

I think those audio controls on the steering wheel look tacky and cheap. It's not really that hard to reach 1 foot away to switch the radio anyways.

Steering wheel audio controls are absolutely the thing I miss most.

Toyota must have been just about the last company to put audio controls on the steering wheel.

I especially like rental cars that have a radio mute button on the steering wheel. I use the mute button when my wife starts talking or use the steering wheel volume controls to up the volume if I don't want to listen to her!

I had them on my 92 Taurus back in the day and actually I found them more distracting to use than reaching out for the actual switch.

I've come to believe that better ergonomics can be better than just making the switches closer.

Actually they are on all the time, IIRC.

According to the user's manual the heated mirrors are controlled with the rear defogger switch. (They call the heating elements "defoggers," but I'm hoping they be defrosters where I live.)

Is this statement also true for a 96 LS?

I miss having 2 settings for the heated seats.
Even my 99 Accord had Hi/Lo settings ... the one setting seems
like a cheap move, as it doesn't get hot enough on cold Canadian mornings.
