nakamichi transplant?
I recently bought a 96 LS and its got practically all I was looking for in terms of options (trac control, 6 disc changer, heated seats). It's got low mileage (50k) and it 's black on black, which is just what I was hoping for. BUT it just has the premium sound system (probably just fine for most people but I'm a total sound freak) Is it possible to transplant a Nakamichi sound system to this car? How much would it cost?

You would be better off with putting an avtermarket system there that would sound better then Nakamichi for the $$$ you would spend. For the choice in aftermarket systems check "Lexus Electronics".

well, I actually haven't done anything about it, but I'm always thinking about it. I don't really want to go the aftermarket way because I really like the way the interior looks and I wouldn't like to alter it. That's why I was curious about transplanting a Nakamichi. Although I do recognize that a synthesizer is needed...

If you ask any competent shop to flush mount your new Head Unit / EQ into your dash board it will actually look much better then stock. I did mine myself though.
Don't mind the nasty looking kick panel, it's not there any more.

This one is custom but you can get a 1 din one here. I bought that kit and moded it for my own application.

Just go to Dash Kits section and find one for your LS.
Good luck
