My battery just died, I have to jump it in the morning to get the car running.. just won't hold its charge. So I'm going to replace it with an Optima yellow top (maybe red top, depending on price difference.. but I think yellow top is the way to go for audio stuff). Luckily, the original battery is still under warranty, so hopefully I can just pay the difference for a new Optima.

Now, I can't figure out exactly which type of Optima the car needs. The Optima website battery selector spits back nothing.

Anyone else done this, and know which size/group to get?

You just beat me to it, I was going to post that link saying I found the answer.

Looks like in the second gen, LexKost had to modify the battery compartment to fit the red top, and according to retrodrive, the yellow top in size 34/78.

 

oh, and we run a red-top in the '00 LS (waiting for my battery to die ) and it fit fine, just had to bend the cables a lil bit.

 

Optimas are available in reverse terminals so you don't have to re do the wiring also to fit toyotas but they are more expensive.

 

Well I wanted to get an optima, but I ended up getting a Die Hard Platinum battery instead. Very similar design to the Optima battery (its fully sealed, can be mounted anyway, great for deep cycling).. and it came with a 4 year warranty. Sears stopped selling Optimas! ANd it has more cold cranking amps than the Optima red top.. Check it out:

It also has a very solid reserve capacity.

Man, it sure is nice to have a proper battery again. You take it for granted, but it is so annoying when you have to get your car jumped everytime you want to start it!

 

I recently dropped in an optima yellow top into my first gen. without any mods other than to place a piece of plastic under the tray to raise the battery a little so the tie down would fit snugly. Other than loosening some play on the cables,, no problem at all.
