Default 1994 LS 400 Power steering riddle

first day to the forum. here is my issue. My power steering has a mistery. I do not have a power steering leak and it seems to work just fine, until the weather gets cold. In Houston, it was finally cold the week of Thanksgiving. as I drove to work it was about 45 degrees, my power steering was out, or partially out. When I accelerate over 1600 rpms, it loosens up and works, but when I am below that it is out. now that same day even when the engine is hot, when the tempeture outside gets over 50 degrees it works fine no matter what rpms I am at. To reconfirm this to me, this past week we had a cold rush. In the morning it was 70 degrees, p/s running great. at 3pm the tempeture had dropped below 50 degrees and my p/s went haywire. back to out at idle and then when accelerated over 1500 rpms it works. what do you think?

possibly low of fluid or using the wrong type of fluid. make sure you are using dexron III atf in your ps system.

Hmmm I think you should do some quick searches. I dont remember the part name but there is something that is on the steering rack itself that is involved with the speed sensor side of things. I cant quite remember it right now. Just do a search on power steering and you will see what I mean.

there are 2 screens in the ps system that you should be concerned with:

1) screen at the bottom of the reservoir on the ps pump itself

2) screen in the solenoid/pressure valve on the steering rack that pito is referring to

do a forum search, there are plenty of threads with photos regarding the solenoid.

Default Power Steering Leaking

Hey Guys & Gals,
I own a 1995 LS400 and today I noticed fluid under my Power steering Pump and also on the steering rack (the same side with the pump). I want to think that the leak is from the pump but the pump works fine. I have not experienced any problem with it thus far.

Please tell me what could be the possible cause of this and how could it be resolved.

In addition, I am hearing a constant noise from my engine that I used to hear only for few minutes when the engine is cold. It sound like a "pinking" noise. Any suggestion as to the cause of this noise would be helpful.

Thank you very much in advance.
