Default Metal Shavings in Tranny

How does one detect metal shavings in the tranny. What is it suppose to look like. Do you see it on the dip stick? i discovered that when I wipe my dipstick, the long metal wire part causes a dark mark on the cloth. Is that the metal shaving that we are talking about. I had always thought that any metal shavings would have been trapped by the magnets on the tranny pan.

Drain some of the fluid into a clear plastic container, shavings or such will show up.

If memory serves, I think the drain plug is magnetic.
If not just drop a magnet into the pan you just dumped your old fluid into.

Correct, the drain plug is magnetic, and will attract tiny metal particles. I do a 2 quart tranny flush at every oil change (5k miles).

The magnet attracts ferrous particles so metal particles such as aluminum, brass, copper, and rubber won't get trap by magnets.

Suloh,
My high mileage 92 LS is just incredible. She runs smoother than my 95 which is immaculate, and also my friend's 2000 dealership maintained and with 70k miles. Mine has about 240k on it. She purrs like a kitten. I don't understand it. I redline her daily and she refuses to give in. Just had the brakes done. New rotors up front, and new pads in the rear.I had to do the timing belt and fan bracket a year ago, but that's about it. Get 25 mpg highway 13 city. can't complain. Suspension is shot, she floats like a boat. The only thing she needs is some new rubber liner on one of the rear doors, A/C compressor, and a new driver's seat. These problems existed when I got her 3 years ago for $3200 with 170 k miles. So I have put 70k hard driven miles on her with minimal maintenance. I got my money out of her and more. She has a lot of life left in her.

I love the agressive look of the Gen 1. Mine definitely looks ragged, but when I need to travel in style, I have my 95LS and my 140 chassis MB S420. That about sums it up.

When I look on my dipstick, I usually see it like a pinkish or silvery if it has the shavings in it. When I saw that, I did a flush and no problems since. Not all of the shavings go to that magnet.

What does "Flush" mean? Is it a special procedure where chemicals are used to clean out the dirt from the tranny or is it just changing all the tranny fluid?

if you remove the tranny pan, there should be 2 or 3 magnets inside which will indicate tranny wear
