It is rare for the differential to be damaged but obviously a mechanical part can fail. Some metal on the drainplug is normal so it is hard to diagnose your situation.

For what it is worth I have a low mileage (apx 50k miles) diff out of a 95 LS400. It has the 3 bolt mounting arangement that the 90-97 cars have. I bought it shortly after buying my 99 LS400 as it has 3.62 gears vs. the 3.27 gears in my 99. Only after I got it did I realize it would not fit the 98+ vehicles. For $100 plus shipping from Texas it is yours. Send me a PM if interested.

JBrady,

Missed this post, but I will take that deal. I have 3 LS400's and just switched diff fluid on my 94 LS. Not a real fun job in terms of keeping clean but easy enough. For your DIY crowd, you need some sort of penetrant to loosen the plugs or a lift w lots of clearance. Those plugs were last touched in Toyota City Japan & were a *****!!

my diff in my 01 GS430 had the same symptoms(roaring sound when you let off gas at 60mph).

this happened at 23,000 miles and was replaced under warranty.
