you can use regular and the computer will adjust performance for the lower octane fuel so you wont get as many MPG and power will be slightly reduced

I have had my '98 LS for just over 2 years. I have always run Plus(89) gas in it and I can't tell a difference from the couple of times I actually used Premium(91). I have actually used Regular(87) a time or two with no ill effects but was worried it might cause other problems over time (like carbon build-up and such.)

I also have not noticed any difference in MPG's. I get 20-22 in strictly city driving and I recently got 32 MPG on an Interstate trip where I didn't need the air on.

There seems to be a *widely* varying opinion on this topic.

Mine was on regular gas before I got it for the last few months till I bought it...but it's DEFINITELY RECOMMENDED to use Premium, hence why it says "PREMIUM FUEL ONLY" in like 3 different places...so that's what I use now.

Sometimes it can cause a slight tick in the engine..but when you switch gas your engine computer eventually learns to handle it somewhat...I dunno, if the manual says use PREMIUM, I have faith in Toyota's recommendations...

if they rape u for $$ for premium then run the middle mix (89-90) octane and you shouldnt have TOO much trouble.

if ur switching to a lower octane try this, right after u fill up the tank w/reg unplug the battery ground for about 10mins to reset the ECU, that way it will take less time to adjust the fuel maps to the lower octane.

2.40 in Athens GA. I think the highest i paid was like 3.20 back in july. I remember yelling at the pump. It was like a 67 dollar fill up. I remeber to save gas i wouldn't run the AC. I wonder if it made a difference.

Ouch 4 bucks a gallon. That would be like an 84 dollar fillup. ew. Sorry dude.

You may also just unplug the fuses for the FI ECU. That way to still retain seat memory and radio memories.
