Dear all, I am reaching out again to inquire about the compatibility of gas tanks from the first generation (1990-2000) with my 1997 LS400. Unfortunately, my current gas tank has succumbed to rust, prompting me to explore the possibility of fitting a 1996 or 1998 gas tank on my 1997 LS400. If anyone has information regarding the interchangeability of these gas tanks, I would greatly appreciate your input. Thank you to everyone who responds.

 

Your 97 is a second generation, which started in 95. While I can't say with experience, I strongly believe a 96 fuel tank will fit in your 97, as should a 95. For the 98, the part numbers between the 95-97 and the 98-00 years are not the same, so it might not fit:

Just to clarify your post as well, first generation is 1990-1994. Those gas tanks won't fit your car

Your car is second generation, 1995-2000, but specifically the pre-facelift model - 1995-1997. Post-facelift is 1998-2000

Agreed with GoldStar's post. The 1996 gas tank has the highest probability to fit your car, if not an exact fit.
